SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS FOR ENGLISH I PRE AP 2010 / 2011
Be sure to write in complete sentences in paragraph format. Be aware of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar conventions. Be sure to label each assignment with the correct Roman Numeral (I, II, III, and IV).

I.) Mentally review the men and women that Elie Weisel includes in his account of his experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto and the concentration camps. Select six characters that affected his life either positively or negatively. For each of the six:
a) Identify the character in a couple of sentences.
b) How does this person affect the author’s life? Be very specific and detailed.
c) What was the eventual fate of this character?

II.) Elie Weisel is a recipient of the Nobel Prize. Research the Nobel Prize and write a well developed paragraph including at least 6 important facts about the prize. In another well developed paragraph discuss the events in Elie Weisel’s life that contributed to his winning the prize. You may use the internet, but be sure to put your information in your own words, and do not use Wikipedia as your source.

III.) Search on the Internet and in the media for another example of persecution in the last half of the 20th century, recently or today. You might find an incident of mistreatment/discrimination because of religion, political beliefs, gender, age, or ethnic background. Concentrate on one example such as the discrimination against the Jewish population in Nazi Germany, but do not use this one since you are already aware of this example. Explain the situation, where and when it happened (is happening) and the suffering that has resulted. If progress has been made toward a solution, include that information. List your sources or you will receive no credit.

IV.) Letter of Introduction
Write a one page letter of introduction to your new teacher. Decide what you would like your teacher to know about you as you begin your high school career. You may include any information that you would like to share, but be sure to mention what sort of student you are.

If you have any questions concerning the assignment, I can be reached at 936-329-2173 this summer.
